Hello,

My name is Alanna and I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. I graduated from York University with a B.A Hon. in Geography and a TESOL certificate, which is also TESL Ontario accredited.

I have been fortunate enough to have spent the past 2+ years in South Korea teaching students. Being over there has taught me many valuable lessons that I have been fortunate to walk away with. Since there is a big cultural difference, I have learned to adapt to my surroundings and take different approaches to how students absorb information. Some are visual learners while others may be more audio oriented. I have learn to incorporate many teaching aids into lessons that get students engaged and excited (i.e. videos, pictures)

I specialize in teaching English and therefore have a firm grasp of the English language. I have been able to work with students that range from beginner level (learning to read) to advanced (international school test preparation).

I focused a lot of time on Reading and Listening skills. Students would read passages and answer fairly in depth comprehension questions. I would help students to skim, scan and annotate the passages in order to find the correct answer. For Listening, I would focus on a specific topic and have the listen to mini lectures and have them point out what they thought was the key information they needed to know.

Along with teaching students, I have had experience volunteering at learning centres that focused on a variety of subjects. I was responsible for helping in the English and Math sections and to help students with their homework and answer any questions they may have had.
