Tutoring Services and Experience
My passion for teaching began early. I started volunteering as a teaching assistant for Community Living Toronto’s Literacy First program when I was in high school. For three years, I worked with adults with intellectual disabilities, who, as a group, boasted differing reading and numeracy levels. In my commitment to catering to the individual needs of each student, I took the initiative to design personalized lesson plans for the unique needs of each student.
Later on, I became involved with Houselink Community Homes, a charity that provides housing and tutoring services to families who could not otherwise afford it. This permitted me the privilege to work with at-risk children and assess their progress after each meeting, usually once or twice a week. By combining formal instruction and interactive activity, and being versatile in my approach, I built meaningful relationships with my students founded on openness of communication and curiosity, learning as much from them as they did from me.
As a recent graduate from Master's program at the University of Toronto in Comparative Literature, I had the opportunity to lead and facilitate fellow graduate and undergraduate seminars of up to 3 hours, in both French and English. I was awarded the honour of Ontario Graduate Scholar for my high academic achievement. I served on the executive board of the Literary Studies Union and acted as publicist of the English undergraduate journal, Idiom. As well, I am a published poet with my chapbook, The Unfinished Flame of the Lower Oceans published in April of last year by the Toronto-based publishing house Swimmers Group.
While eyeing prospective PhD programs, I want to continue tutoring. My approach is founded on positivity and encouragement. I teach not only concepts but good study habits, as I have had to figure these out for myself. I know everyone has a different learning approach and I love the challenge of adapting my teaching style to each individual student.
I hope to hear from you soon!
